Sunbeds efficient ad “D” Production

Tanning beds may be even more effective as a vitamin D producer than was previously believed. That’s the consensus of research published by Dr. Michael Holick’s group at Boston University. Holick’s group studied 15 people aged 20-53, tracking their vitamin D blood levels as they tanned in tanning equipment three times a week. (read more)

Vitamin D Linked with Lower Risk of Prostate Cancer

In a new study, men with the highest levels of vitamin D in their blood were 57 percent less likely than men with the lowest levels to succumb to prostate cancer. (read more)

U.S. Derms Refer 900,000 To Sunbeds

An International Smart Tan Network survey of 6,881 indoor tanning clients revealed that 11 percent of tanning clients say a doctor referred them to a tanning salon for therapeutic reasons and that 28 percent of those referring physicians were dermatologists. The survey shows that the recent press release from the American Academy of Dermatology in which the organization contended that “100 percent of dermatologists discourage tanning” is baseless. Skin cancer and nutrition—stop blaming the sun!

In the rush by dermatologists and sunscreen companies to demonize sunlight exposure as the universal cause of skin cancers, there has been a total disregard for another factor that strongly protects against or strongly promotes skin damage.  That factor is what we eat.  Nutrition, according to whether it is healthful or noxious, can have either profoundly positive or negative influences on the skin. One of the internet’s leading health-education web sites this week published a report slamming those who have singled-out UV exposure as the cause of melanoma — citing reports arguing that alleged melanoma increases are more a product of increased reporting and less a product of actual increase in disease. Does Vitamin D prevent Colon Cancer?
